September Is the New January: You Don’t Have to Wait to Start Again

By Coach Nick
I’ve always thought September was an underrated time of year.
Summer is winding down, kids are back in school, vacations are over, and schedules begin to feel more structured again. Football is back, routines are returning, and suddenly we realize there are only a few months left in the year.
And for many of us, that realization brings something else to mind: all those things we said we were going to do back in January.
Lose weight. Start working out. Eat better. Get more sleep. Take better care of ourselves. Maybe even get our finances in better shape.
January often starts with motivation and good intentions, but then life happens. Work gets busy, family responsibilities pile up, and unexpected situations come along. Before you know it, the habits you promised yourself you would build have slipped away.
So let me ask you a question:
Who decided you have to wait until January to start again?
September can be your reset too.

Knowing What to Do Usually Isn’t the Problem

After years of working with people in health and fitness, I’ve realized something important: most people already know more about healthy living than they give themselves credit for.
You probably know that moving your body is important. You know drinking more water would probably help. You know eating more protein, fruits, and vegetables is a good idea. You know that getting five hours of sleep every night probably isn’t helping you feel your best.
The problem usually isn’t knowing what to do. The challenge is doing it consistently.
Health recommendations can sometimes sound overwhelming when you look at them as one big number. But when you break them down, they become much more manageable.
You don’t have to go from sitting on the couch to working out six days a week. Start where you are. Take a walk, try some resistance training, take a fitness class, ride your bike, or work in the yard. Find a form of movement you actually enjoy enough to keep doing.
Some movement is always better than no movement.
The goal isn’t to build the perfect routine overnight. The goal is to start building momentum.

Don’t Forget About Recovery

Exercise is important, but it’s only one part of taking care of yourself. Recovery matters too. Sleep matters. Rest matters. Stress matters.
Many adults simply aren’t getting enough sleep, and it shows up in more ways than just feeling tired. When you’re exhausted, you’re more likely to rely on caffeine, skip workouts, make quick food choices, and struggle to stay consistent with healthy habits.
Health isn’t only about how hard you can push yourself. Sometimes, improving your health means learning how to recover better.

Keep Your Reset Simple

If you’re ready for a September reset, don’t create a list of 15 things you’re going to change.
Start with four:
Move. Nourish. Recover. Reflect.
Move your body a little more than you’re moving right now. Walk, exercise, ride your bike, take a class, or simply find more opportunities to be active throughout the day.
Nourish yourself better. Focus on getting adequate protein, drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables, and building a strong foundation before chasing the latest diet trend.
Supplements can have a place too, but remember what the word means. They are meant to supplement your foundation, not replace it.

Recover by paying attention to your sleep, rest, and stress.
And finally, reflect.
Ask yourself:
What’s working in my life right now?
And:
What’s making being healthy harder than it needs to be?
That second question is important.
Sometimes the obstacle isn’t motivation. Maybe it’s your schedule, your work, your environment, stress, finances, or simply trying to do everything alone without accountability or support.
That’s why I believe health is about more than what happens inside a gym.

You Still Have Time

There are still months left in the year.
You don’t have to write the year off just because January didn’t go the way you planned.
Imagine entering January with several months of better habits already behind you instead of feeling like you’re starting from zero again.
That’s the opportunity a September reset gives you.

You don’t need to become a completely different person tomorrow. Just make tomorrow a little better than today, then do it again.

Coach Nick’s Challenge of the Week

This week, choose one habit that you’ve allowed to slip.
Maybe it’s walking, going to the gym, drinking more water, preparing your meals, taking your supplements consistently, or getting to bed on time.
Whatever you choose, write it down and commit to it for the next seven days.
Don’t worry about being perfect.
Just prove to yourself that you can start again.
Next week, we’ll take the next step in the September Reset.
Before you decide where you want to go, you need to know where you’re starting.
